pushing the paint around. slightly crazy.

E-mail Print PDF

about Brad Munro (Australia): I am a Visual Artist who enjoys the challenge of painting large format abstracts.

I simply love pushing the paint around to see what happens. I’m totally obsessed with the act of painting and my friends think I'm crazy.  Currently I'm living in a large old hall in Australia and my bedroom is 150sqm. Not bad for a walk in wardrobe!

career highlights: My heart cherishes the fact that I was accepted straight into 3rd year painting at the National Art SchoolSydney. N.A.S is a highly competitive school and to be fast-tracked was truly an honour. I believe it to be a first in the school's history and to my knowledge has yet to be repeated. This opportunity gave me the chance to be taught by some of the best artists in our country and most importantly, I met a great circle of students, with whom all are still good friends today.

which creative people, places and things on your radar right now?

people: Currently I’m revisiting the figurative artists I esteemed as a student. German and Italian expressionists. Though my all time favourite would have to be the American artist, Philip Guston. I just love his lifetime achievement as a painter and how in his later years he dared to ‘paint badly’.

places: I love Asia. I love the people, food, culture and heat. I find the colours stimulating and the streets alive with activity. As an artist, I've taught myself how to look and in Asia I find there is a lot to observe in the most ordinary of places.

things: My latest passion is Hi Fi Stereo. Music is such an important part of my studio practice that I recently upgraded my system to cope with the larger space. The challenge was, 'How to get Hi Fidelity sound with the convenience of an iPod?' Answer: Wadia iTransport. Couple that bad boy with a good amp and floor speakers, and transform your studio into a music hall.

what's was the last rule you broke? Maybe not breaking a rule as such, though I just painted a large head over a perfectly good abstraction just to see what it would look like (see above). Personally I love the painting but than again my friends do think I’m slightly crazy! Tell me what you think!

what's your favorite daydream? World peace is the first thing that comes to mind. Second daydream – Painting badly like Philip Guston!

if you could ask a question of someone you respect, who and what would you ask?

After long consideration, I have to admit I find this question a little self-folding. Meaning: I could only really respect somebody if I understood him or her and if I understood him or her I would not need to ask him or her a question. So let me simply say – I would have liked to play checkers with Abraham Lincoln.
