about Frédéric Snauwaert (Belgium): I'm a graphic designer that moved to Singapore to explore publishing in Asia. I am not a very structured person and that makes me an opportunist sometimes, hence the great escape. I hail from Belgium, a humble country with a passion for beauty. Comfortable cradle.
Humbleness is a requirement for designers not less than clarity, simplicity and beauty are for the work they present to the audience. My goal is to make comprehensive and appealing design for useful and appealing content. In Singapore, my cultural background is a driving factor in the approach to my work, at other times it is the so-called fifth wheel...

career highlights: Moving to Singapore was a highlight in itself. It was an interesting and very motivating move. I have had the chance to work with positive minds and meet good people from different corners of the globe. Those people put lots of wood on my bonfire and encouraged me to work hard and efficiently. It also gave me a nice overview of the 'differences' between East and West, which now and then seem born from obsolete sensitivity. Working abroad adds a new dimension and is therefore recommended for everyone who likes surprises!

which creative people, places and things on your radar right now? The world and everything in it is always on my radar. There are opportunities everywhere, and it would be a shame to let them go by unnoticed. I am interested in graphic design from places that are not as hot as, say, NYC, Berlin or The Hague, for example Prague (stormtype fontclub); Argentina (Ale Paul, Sudtipos); Moscow ([kAk) magazine); and Ulan Bator, which fascinate me always. Again, lots of places to point radars at. More 'locally', I am interested in way-finding systems, for example Mijksenaar, Amsterdam, and I always like to see how mother Phaidon gives birth to another messiah; The Story of Art, designed by Sonya Dyakova. Or even A Day at El Bulli, The Silver Spoon, or 1080 recipes, which are cook books (!) again with impeccable underestimated editorial design. Lots of these are not NEW, but they are timeless. There's no need to always hunt for the NEW stuff, because those are likely to appear in pop-up windows nowadays. "Relax, it's just a calling — Mother Teresa [sic]"

what's your favourite daydream? Being a hermit in a dark corner of Saint Petersburg a century ago, drawing and printing propaganda posters for the Utter Nonsense Movement Collective (LVTP) and then discussing the works with like-minded hobos over vodka and cheap tobacco.

what was the last rule you broke? Trying to create one that can't be broken.
if you could ask a question of someone you respect, who and what would you ask?
