about Anthony Carpendale (UK): Award-winning film-maker specializing in horror, satire, squirrels and smut.
career highlights: Rolling my eyes at Yoko Ono’s pathetic on-stage simpering and her spotting me doing so; helping offend Vincent Gallo; and getting good film performances from both cats and squirrels.
which creative people, places and things on your radar right now?
places: There's an abandoned cement factory near Brighton, full of artful graffiti, industrial decay, and menacing pigeons. I also recently discovered a secret air force dump containing jets, missiles, and a fork lift truck. I like dead places devoid of people.
things: Amazingly prolific horror soundtrack behemoth Dissolved; the unique and brilliant comic-book work of Paul O’Connell; the demented animation of Cyriak; classic Polish film posters; anything by Don Hertzfeldt; music by Thumpermonkey – “bipolar freak-out of the mentally corrupt”; the intricate and endearingly sweet (in my eyes anyway) demonic sculptures of Mark Powell; the strange and beautiful art of Ray Caesar; and the multi-talented Andrew Fiddy.
Lomo cameras (especially the fish-eye); pear cider; cat hair lint roller; post-it notes; and Moo cards.
what’s your favourite daydream? Thinking about the immortality of the crab.
what was the last rule you broke? Visiting the abandoned factory, which involved hiding from truck drivers and shadowy security. Trespassing is more fun when you have to skulk.
if you could ask a question of someone you respect, who and what would you ask?
Stanley Kubrick – "Why did you leave us?"
Uwe Boll – "Why won’t you leave us?"
Ernest Borgnine – "Does your secret to longevity have to be performed daily or hourly?"
