maximum adrenaline. imagine me raving. action painting

E-mail Print PDF

about Delphine Bernard (France/Singapore): I am an ex-journalist, self-taught abstract expressionist painter.  I have a shamanistic way of painting, chanelling spiritual and conflicting emotions.  I have been living in Singapore since 2005 and have a studio on River Valley Road, by appointment only.

career highlights:  My exhibition at the Swissôtel The Stamford in September 2008 and the live painting session on the Swissôtel helipad in front of 500 VIP guests!  I completed two paintings with only fifteen minutes for each; the DJ's music was thumping and the city was scintillating all around us... maximum adrenaline!  In addition, I created four large paintings for the lobby areas of the luxury condo The Icon: I spent an hour on each, in the privacy of my studio... imagine me raving about the wonderful size of the canvasses, dancing around and inside them... it was action painting at its best!

which creative people, places and things on your radar right now?

people: Digital art and artists... I saw a wonderful exhibition on digital and interactive design at the Victoria & Albert Museum in London last month, which I hope will travel to Singapore!  Digital artists bring the beauty and fun back into the arts after so many years of stern arid conceptual art. Finally there is something less brainy, more playful...and aesthetic!

places: India has never rejected or abandoned its cultural heritage so the mix of contemporary artistic expression with the traditional is creating something really new, fun and extremely diverse!

things: TED.com - to keep in touch with what is in the mind of the world's most talented scientists, artists, thinkers, etc.

what's your favourite daydream? I see myself in a huge studio adjacent to a big house, in a big garden, in the center of a buzzing city... I can paint indoors and outdoors... It's an open house, there is a very long wood table in the main room, friends and passing artists can stop by anytime, to write, draw, play and have endless conversations around great food and great wine... It's not a daydream, it's my future ;)

what was the last rule you broke? I discipline myself with self-imposed rules all the time... and break them all the time to achieve some kind of balance... so it's an endless list! Last Singaporean rule I broke?  Jay-walking, an hour ago. Aya! Bad bad girl...!

if you could ask a question of someone you respect, who and what would you ask?

The Dalai-Lama: "Is striving towards absolute peacefulness the ultimate goal in life?"; "Is it really more important than giving birth to one's own talent?"; and "Should J.S.Bach, Mozart or Michelangelo rather have spent their life meditating in a cave?"
