Keep our oceans clean, don't be shellfish. It's World Turtle Day!
23 May 2019 - World Turtle Day aims to celebrate and increase awareness of turtles and tortoises worldwide. The annual observance encourages human action in enhancing the livelihood and conservation of these magnificent marine animals.
Despite having one of the longest lifespans as living animals, turtles are facing multifarious challenges to their livelihood. One main problem is the consumption of plastic pollutants in the ocean: more than half of the world’s sea turtles have ingested some form of plastic at some point of their lives. These turtles often mistake plastic for food sources (e.g. jellyfish), causing blockages within their digestive systems and plausibly death.
In tandem with World Turtle Day, Meshminds 2.0: ArtxTechForGood features OceanScrub, an interactive mobile game that promotes the conservation of the marine biosphere which turtles live in. Players navigate polluted waters, guiding sea creatures to safety by avoiding plastic pollution. The game hopes to raise awareness on marine plastic pollution, encouraging individuals to share their pledge in reducing consumption of single-use plastics and thus helping various marine animals, like turtles, along the way.
The sea turtles above was designed and animated for the OceanScrub by artist Jason Loo and Cherlyn Mark.
