The 11th ACM SIGGRAPH Conference and Exhibition on Computer Graphics and Interactive Techniques in Asia will take place in Tokyo, Japan. The annual event attracts the respectable technical and creative people from all over the world who are excited by research, science, art, animation, gaming, interactivity, education and emerging technologies.

The Asia VR/AR Impact Lab were invited to showcase Oceans We Make (OWM) by Warrior9 VR. Under the Virtual Reality (VR)/Augmented Reality (AR) category, Impact Lab presented original research work about the impacts of Virtual Reality experiences tailored towards positive causes, using the VR experience, OWM, as the key case study. OWM is a 3-minute long immersive and interactive VR experience that encourages participants to question their use of plastic. The experience blends beautiful cinematic graphics, engaging game mechanics and an emotional narrative as a novel form of VR storytelling to drive positive environmental impact, particularly pushing for prevention of plastic pollution.

Important findings were found in our post-user experience survey results, including an astonishing 84% of people rating at least 8 out of 10 for how concerned they feel about plastic pollution after the experience. This bore testimony to the power of VR experiences in educating people about pertinent causes, such as environmentalism and preventing plastic pollution.

ACM SIGGRAPH stands for the international Association for Computing Machinery’s Special Interest Group on Computer GRAPHics and Interactive Techniques.
